Cisco NetRanger system
version 2.2

Supplier:

Cisco Systems, Inc.
Platforms:

Solaris
Description:

NetRanger is an enterprise-scale, real-time, intrusion detection system designed to detect, report, and terminate unauthorized activity throughout a network. The industry's first intrusion detection system, NetRanger is a dynamic security component of Cisco's end-to-end security product line. The NetRanger system includes two components: Sensor and Director. NetRanger Sensors, which are high-speed network "appliances," analyze the content and context of individual packets to determine if traffic is authorized. If an intrusion is detected, such as a SATAN (System Administrators Tool for Analyzing Networks) attack, a ping sweep, or if an insider sends out a document containing a proprietary code word, NetRanger sensors can detect the misuse in real-time, forward alarms to a NetRanger Director management console for geographical display, and remove the offender from the network.
Features:

  1. Easy Installation and Setup (Sensor appliance can be installed by technician-level personnel
  2. Real-Time Intrusion Detection (ThreeTiers of Detection: Name Attacks, General Category Attacks, and Extraordinary)
  3. Real-Time Response to Unauthorized Activity (NetRanger terminates a network connection without affecting any future connections)
  4. Detailed Intrusion Alarms (users can develop metrics and track trends to determine the security state of a network)
  5. Scalability (A single NetRanger Director can centrally manage activity from many NetRanger sensors on the same LAN or over a WAN in a secure fashion)
  6. High-Speed Performance(NetRanger Sensors are optimized for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI)
  7. Comprehensive Attack Database (the NetRanger system detects both content and context attacks at very high speeds)
