Passport is a public-key infrastructure
(PKI) designed to address the unique security challenges of wireless
devices. Intended to be used with any device, for any application,
Passport provides selectable levels of security (authentication,
confidentiality, integrity, authorization management and proof-of-contact)
for mobile phones, intelligent pagers,PDAs and handheld computers.
Passport uses digital signatures to uniquely identify messages senders and facilitate digital receipts along with public key encryption for communications privacy. Digital certificates distribute, from secure sources, the digital certificates needed to allow all parties to a transaction to trust the communictions that take place. Digital permits represent an an advanced application of secure documents that can be used for electronic versions of tickets, coupons, client authorizations, receipts and licenses. Digital permits are extremely flexible, yet very secure and private. They can be very portable, yet unalterabley maintain the identity of the issuer and user. The architecture includes a digital certificate server, distributed registration authority, a digital permit server as system infrastructure and client / server front ends for digital signature signing / verification and encryption / decryption.
