Description:

TrustedMIME - Secure Internet Mail

The Internet is an open network - e-mail messages communicated over the Internet can be viewed, modified or even deleted without the knowledge of the sender or indeed the recipient. Such an open channel is obviously unsuitable for secure business communications. Strong (128-bit) encryption and strong authentication are essential for enabling the Internet to be used for secure communications. The strength of the cryptography is the key factor! Weak cryptography, such as 40-bit or 64-bit creates the illusion of security, which may result in users sending sensitive information over what is, in effect, still an open channel. TrustedMIME is a simple to install plug-in, available worldwide, for existing mail systems, which provides strong (128-bit) encryption, authentication, smart card support and much more. TrustedMIME provides an extremely cost-effective means of establishing a highly secure channel for internal and external business communications. Personnel can continue to use their existing e-mail system, avoiding the need for re-training. And, to facilitate migration to strong cryptography, TrustedMIME can also be configured to send and receive weakly encrypted (40-bit/64-bit) messages.

TrustedMIME/Corporate enables an organisation to customise TrustedMIME for its own use. One of the difficulties in deploying secure e-mail solutions throughout an organisation is the support required to set up users. This set up usually involves helping the user to acquire and install a Personal Security Environment (PSE), setting up trusted Certification Authority certificates and setting the various algorithm and other security options to match the organisation's security policy.

TrustedMIME/Corporate addresses all of these issues by allowing an administrator to customise the installation kit and then distribute it, either by e-mail, intranet or on diskette. When the customised installation kit is installed and run, users will be guided through the process of acquiring a PSE and will then be ready to use secure e-mail.
