Internet Manager is an innovative
administration tool that allows the organisation to determine exactly
how its Internet connection is being used. Internet Manager operates
in the first instance as a surveillance system by capturing all
Internet traffic and recording its data onto a relational database
in real time. From this database, the network administrator is able
to run detailed queries in order to discover information such as
which sites have been accessed, which are the most popular sites,
who are the most active users and which times of the day are most
active. The level of information provided in these queries is not
available in firewalls, proxy log analysers and many competitors'
products, which operate as simple log-based systems.
In the second instance, Internet Manager is able to block access to sites that are deemed inappropriate using SmartList technology, which automatically builds and maintains a list of restricted web sites based on the Network Administrator's pre-defined criteria. For example, words such as 'football' and 'nude' might be added to the administrators 'Suspect Dictionary' and subsequent attempts to access sites containing these words will fail. As content filtering within Internet Manager is intelligent, it is able to place words within their correct context before deciding whether to restrict access to any site. This method is on the whole far more effective than the currently popular use of 'blocking lists', which consist of pre-set lists of inappropriate sites that are periodically updated by a third party. |
