ScanMail is designed to scan
traffic passing through the Exchange Server for viruses, either
manually or at prescheduled intervals. MAPI-compliant and multithreaded
for fast performance, ScanMail decodes UUENCODED and MIMED attachments
and decompresses files compressed with many different algorithms.
If a virus is found, it is isolated at the server for further action,
and e-mail notification is sent to the sender, recipient, and administrator.
The original e-mail message (minus its attachment) is delivered
as normal. ScanMail can reliably scan the contents of mailboxes
migrated to Exchange from cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail, and from Exchange
Server 4.0 to 5.x.
Once installed, ScanMail's operation is transparent
unless a virus is detected. ScanMail uses rule-based and pattern
recognition technology to provide detection and removal of known
and unknown viruses. ScanMail also incorporates MacroTrap,
Trend's patent-pending generic macro virus scanning engine, which
detects and removes known and unknown macro viruses. Automatic
web-based updating is included, and updates are automatically
distributed to all connected post offices.
For installations with 600+ mailboxes, ScanMail
provides a utility to export the Exchange addressing information
independently from the scanning process; this enhances start-up
scanning performance significantly. Administrators can also use
it to schedule address exporting to include new mail users.
ScanMail maintains a comprehensive activity log
and can be configured to respond to virus detection incidents
in several different ways. Because it's installed on the mail
server, there's no danger that users can disable scanning to sneak
an unauthorized file past the system
