PC software list

This page was written by Christopher Spry. It is a list to remind me where to get updates of the software that I have on my PCs running 'Windows 2000'. Some marked items can be obtained from our ftp server. Others may find it useful to see the range of software that is available. There is such rapid development in software for PCs that this list can serve as a way to keep up-to-date.

• 4NT, '4DOS for Windows NT' v 3.02A (4.01 available), JP Software and their ftp server. Enhanced replacement for 'command.com' and 'cmd.exe' command shells with scripting.
• ACID Style v 2.0c, Sonic Foundry. Sound editing and effects for on-linear DV editing.
• Acrobat Distiller 3.02, Adobe. It is available with PageMaker v 6.5 with an upgrade. Prepares documents in the 'Acrobat' format, which is operating system independent.
• Acrobat reader v 4 (v 6 available), Adobe. Read 'Acrobat' formatted documents. (Acrobat v 6 caused an irrecoverable BSOD, when I installed it on my Tecra 8100 under Windows 2000).
• Analog v 5.21. Stephen Turner. Free program to present summaries of IIS web usage.
• arj v 2.50a international version (v 2.60 available), from std.com. DOS file compression utility. Shareware.
• AutoRoute 2002, Microsoft Road route planning, maps with GPS support, street and area code location for Great Britain, France and Germany.
• Cardbox for Windows v 2, Cardbox Software. Small footprint relational database with fast search functions. I used it to write a book which illustrated the value of this software in medical research
• Cardbox client/server32, Cardbox Software. Internet versions to provide remote access to Cardbox databases.
• Catch-UP scanner v 1.2, Manageable Software Serv. Inc. Internet software updating service: see below.
• CDCopy v 4.007, Markus Barth, A program to copy audio tracks from a CD to hard disk and then to write a CD. You can save files in WAV, AU, RAW, MPG (MPEG 1 Layer 2) and MPA (MPEG 2 Layer 3) format. You can save MP3-Format (MPEG 1 Layer 3) through MP3-Compressor/L3enc or MP3-WAV using L3CODEC and ‘Xing’ MPEG Encoder. You can save files in mono/stereo, 8/16 Bit and 22050/44100 kHz. It has many useful music CD-player functions including access to lyric and CDDB servers. Shareware US$20.00 for the full program.
• CD'n'Go! v 1.55.592, Jose Mejuto. Free program to convert *.wav files to *.mp3 in batch mode and transfer sound from CDs to MP3 files with 'ID3 tags'.
• Clinstat dated 08.05.96, Martin Bland. Free statistical analysis DOS utility program.
• Colorific v 99.20, E-Color Inc. Software to colour calibrate monitors using a coloured' swatch. 
• Compression Engine v 2.00b, Compression Engines. Free program to convert image files to the compressed '.wif' format.
• ConCat/Split v 3.3.2.0, JD Design. Addition to Windows 'Explorer' to allow large files to be put on several diskettes and reassembled later. Shareware.
• Convert (Madison) v 4.08. Joshua H. Madison. Free measurements conversion program.
• Cool Edit v 96, Syntrillum, digital audio editor for Windows 95 and Windows NT, shareware.
• CopyQM v 3.24, New Technologies Inc. Duplicate diskettes of many different sizes and types including Microsoft DMF and Macintosh high-density disks. Runs in a DOS window.
• Dance of the Planets v 2.71 with the 'update' for fast computers, ARC Software Graphical moving display of the solar system.
• DigiGuide v 5, GipsyMedia Ltd. Broadcast schedules for UK radio, and TV programs. Shareware.
• DNS2GO v 2.6.0.0, Deerfield.com. Program to provide a single 'alpha' domain name for changing IP addresses, as provided for example Openworld's ADSL.
• Drive Image v 5.01. Powerquest. Copy images or clones of 'Windows 2000' computers to files or disks for backups or disk cloning.
• exPressIT v 5.1. CDLabelling.com. Print labels for CDs, minidisks etc.
• eFax Messenger v 2.07, eFax, provide a free local fax number in the States or UK, where faxes are converted and sent as an email attachment.
• Encarta '95 (Encarta Reference Suite 2000 available), Microsoft. Multimedia Encyclopedia.
• Factory. Boris. 100 special effects for entry level on-linear DV editing programs.
• FileSync v 2.16, Fileware. Synchronize files and directories. FileDiff v 1.03, a program to compare the contents of two files and CmdSync v 2.0, a 'batch mode' version, is particularly useful for updating files across networks. It can ignore the 2 second time signature on identical files under different operating systems. Also FTPsync v 2.06 and LastChance v 1.03.
• DocuCap, v 1.50. DViCO. 'Firebird Jr.' PC-card with a firewire connector and DocuCap software to capture from an attached video camera and edit digital video, with a plugin for Adobe Premiere v 6.
• Flywheel v 3.35, Plannet Crafters Inc. Additional functions provided for the Microsoft wheel mouse. (No longer available)
• F-Prot v 3.10, Fridrik Skulason. Sunsite UK or DataFellows archives. High quality virus checking and removal program which works in DOS, so is ideal for boot sector virus elimination using a bootable DOS diskette.
• Frhed v 1.0.156 by Raihan Kibria. Free HEX editor.
• Fritz v 6 (v 7 is available), Chessbase GmbH. Chess program.
• FrontPage 2000, HTML editor and Web site software, Microsoft. WWW design, editing and web management software. Visual InterDev is an advanced application that provides for active server pages and will be released late in 1998.
• Fugawi v 3.0.0.113, Northport Systems Inc. Moving map global positioning (GPS) software.
• G7ToWin v A00.03 Beta33, Ron Henderson's free software to download GPS data and display bitmaps to MS Windows computers. Editing and uploading are included.
• GeoClock v 8.4, Joe Ahlgre World maps with overlays of daylight, sun and moon positions in real time.
• GNU-WIN32 UNIX programs for Windows, University of Texas at Austin, Cygwin Project, SunSite UK. Port of many UNIX commands to Windows.

• Icon extracting tool v 1, RealSoftware Program to extract icons from applications and save them as 'ico' files.

• Image Composer v 1.5b. Microsoft. Image editing tool.
• ImageAssembler v 2.07, PanaVue. Program to join (stitch) contiguous images in several graphic files into a single image in one graphic file.
• Instat v 3.05, GraphPAD Software Inc. Statistics program.
• IntelliPoint v 3.1, Microsoft. Software for Microsoft's 'IntelliMouse' giving additional wheel and other functions.
• InTend 2.00a, GraphPAD Software Inc. Laboratory reagent and solution program.
• Internet Connection Sharing, Microsoft. Enabling networked computers to connect to Internet through an 'ICS Host' computer that has a dial-up or ADSL connection. I have a guide to installing it.
• Internet Explorer v 6.0.26. Microsoft. 
• Internet Information Server (IIS) v 5, Microsoft. Web server included in Microsoft's 'Windows'.
• IrfanView v 3.61, Irfan Skiljan, free image viewer and converter for many graphics formats with 'plugins'.
• JellyFish Player v 3, Jellyfish. Backgammon.
• Just Edit, Canopus. Non-linear editing programs for the 'DVStorm' video card, including 'Storm Edit', 'Storm Video', 'Storm Audio', 'Storm Navi', 'Web Video Wizard' and 'SoftXplode'.

• London Access, Instant Access Int. Phone Instant Access Int. +44 20-8205 2596 Map to show where streets, tubes and restaurants are in central London. I understand that this software is no longer available.

• Ordnance Survey maps of the UK CD-ROM, 2nd. edition, Attica.
• Organizer v 2.1 (v 6 available), Lotus Development Corp. Personal information manager (PIM).
• Origin v 4.1 (v 6.0 available), MicroCal Software Inc. Scientific graphics and analysis software.
• Outlook 2000, Microsoft and 'ZedZ Consultants Inc.'. Internet email client program with contact, calendar and other components.
• Outlook Express v 6, Microsoft. Usenet news client program included with Internet Explorer v 6.
• Oxford English Dictionary v 2., Oxford University Press The 'OED' on CD.  If you have problems running it under Windows 2000, email ep.info@oup.co.uk for an update to the program on the CD.
• Oxford Textbook of Medicine, 3rd ed., Oxford University Press. The comprehensive medical textbook on CD.
• PageMaker v 6.5 (v 8 is available), Adobe and 6.52 update. Word-processing, page mark-up and pre-printing software.
• PagisPro'97, Xerox. Scanning and dropping output to other programs. See 'TextBridge Pro', below.
• PaintShop Pro v 4.12 (latest version: 6.0), JASC Inc. v 4.0 to 4.12 update patch. Graphics viewing and editing software.
• Partition Magic v 7, PowerQuest Corps. Resize and alter disk partitions without deleting data.
• Perl for Win32, build 316, Active State. Interpreted programming language much used in Internet applications.
• PGP v 7.0.3 and two hotfixes, PGP International. 'Pretty Good Privacy' encryption software. It uses the clipboard to encrypt and decrypt files including email messages, using pubic and private 'keys'. It has plug-ins for Microsoft's 'Outlook 2000' and 'Outlook Express' and supports secure communications between computers. Free 'time stamping' and 'proof of posting' services are available on Matthew Richardson's site.
• Photoshop v 6, Adobe Commercial-standard graphics editing program.
• PKZip for DOS v 2.50, PKWare File compression and file repository with long filename support.
• PlexTools v 1.04, Plextor. Software to manage Plextor CD-ROM drives, CD-recorders, SCSI interfaces and CD characteristics.
• PolaColor Insight v 4 beta 2. Polaroid Corp. Scanning software for the Polaroid CS-4000 film scanner.
• POV-Ray v 3.02, Persistence of Vision, free ray tracing graphics software. Download.
• PowerChute Plus v 5.2, American Power Conversion. Software to connect to their uninterruptible power supplies and control shutdown and startup when power failures occur.
• PowerDVD v 2.55, Netis Inc. DVD player software.
• PowerToys Microsoft. They include 'Command Prompt Here' v 1.1, 'Desktop Menu', 'Explore From Here', 'Find X' v 1.2, 'Send to X' v 1.2, 'Tweak UI' v 1.1 and 'Shortcut Target Menu' v 1.2  These versions of the programs run under Windows 2000, NT and 9*.
• Premiere v 6, Adobe. Non-linear DV editing program.
• Quicken 2002 Deluxe and Business, Intuit. Personal and business finance software.
• QuickTime MoviePlayer v 5.0.1 and Plug-In v 2.0, Apple. Program to play QuickTime movie files.
• QuickView Plus v 5.1, JASC Software. Windows Explorer add-on to view, print and work with files.
• RealPlayer Plus, Real Networks Inc. Streaming video and '*.ram' player.
• The Rename v 2.0c, Hervé Thouzard. Free utility program to alter many file names in defined ways.
• Route Master v 3.3. Lexington, Warner & Associates. UK route mapping software with GPS facility. It includes OS maps and street-level maps of cities including London. It may have gone out of production.
• Scraper v 1. ZDNet. Utility to copy error and information messages from program windows.
• Serv-U v 3, Rhinosoft.com. ftp server for Windows.
• ShareScope v 3.4. Ionic Information. Shareware program to monitor UK shares and maintain share portfolios. Data from Hemmington Scott.
• SIREN XPress v 2.0. Sonic Foundry. Free sound jukebox and music management software.
• SkyMap Pro v 8 SkyMap Software. Astronomical companion software including star mapping and 'planetarium'.
• SnagIt v 5.2.2 TechSmith Corp. Shareware screen capture utility with many advanced features.
• TelePower v 4, TDS Telepower. Database on CD of UK phone and fax numbers.
• TeraTerm Pro v 2.3, T. Teranishi. Free software terminal emulator which provides the base for ssh connections. See my guide to installing them.
• TClockEx v 1.4.2. Dale Nurden. Icon tray date and time utility. Freeware.
• TextbridgePro v 9.5, Xerox. Scanning and optical character recognition. Includes 'PagisPro' (see above).
• TextPad v 4.5.0, Helios Software Solutions. Shareware text editor with spell check, block editing, macros etc. My replacement for Notepad.
• THE Rename v 2.0e. Hervé Thouzard. Free program to rename multiple files and folders in many complex ways.
• Total Recorder v 3.3, High Criteria. An universal sound recorder which can capture live audio, line-in and CD. It can convert different sound formats to WAVE. Shareware US$11.95.
• TransMac v 3.4c (v 5 available), Acute Systems. A Windows utility for accessing Macintosh HFS formatted media. This includes high density diskettes, CD-ROMS, SyQuest drives, Zip drives, optical drives, hard drives and most other SCSI drives. Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT are supported.
• TTSSH v 1.5.1, 'ssh' client add-on for TeraTerm Pro v 2.3 to enable Windows computers to access secure 'ssh' v 1 resources on UNIX and other computers. See my guide to installing them.
• Virtual CD v 4.0.4, ‘H+H GmbH’. Software emulation of a CD-ROM drive to play CDs stored on the hard drive.
• Visual Business Cards v 3.2e, RKS Software. Shareware program to prepare business cards.
• VisualRoute v 6.0b, Datametrics Systems Corp.  Available at Imperial College. Graphical 'traceroute' and network analysis program Shareware.
• WebCam-Control-Center v 5. Marc Schneider. Adds functions to a webcam, including motion detection, ftp file transfers, videos created etc.

• WinImage v 5.0, Charles Vollant Floppy disk duplication program. Many formats are supported.
• WinOnCD, v 3.70.541-2, Roxio. Software to record on CDs.
• WinWeather v 4.0, Insanely Great Software Network access to current weather and forecasts world-wide.
• WinZip v 8.1, Nico Mak Computing Inc. File compression software.
• World Atlas v 5.0.0 ( v 6 available), Mindscape International Maps.
• World Atlas Interactive, CD-ROM Attica.
• ws_ftp Pro v 7.5, Ipswitch Shareware. Enhanced ftp (file transfer protocol) program which supports SSL encrypted file transfer. See 'Serv-U' above, the ftp server I use.
• ws_watch. John A Junod. Graphical display of selected networked computers and their current state. 'WhatsUp Gold' v 5 is the commercial version of 'ws_watch'.
• X-Setup v 5.6, Xteq Systems. Free software to configure many settings in 'Windows 2000'. Download from Simtel.
• YATS32 v 8.1, Dillobits Software. Shareware time server and client program for Windows 2000 Professional.
• Zip utilities for DOS and Windows, many flavours. Download several free file compression programs.
• ZoneAlarm Pro v 3, Zone Labs Inc. Firewall with support for ADSL and cable networks.
• ZTreeWin v 1.48d, Kim Henkel Shareware XTreeGold 'look-alike' with additional features, including long file name support. Install over the 'base' v 1.41.

Keeping software current

• You can use the 'Catch-UP' scanner program by Manageable Software Services, Inc. as an Internet software updating service. 'Catch·UP scanner' searches for applications on the PC running it, looking for software for which update information is available. It then generates a 'web form' which can be submitted to the 'Catch·UP' server using most browsers. The 'Catch·UP' server then returns a list of possible updates and download locations from where updates can be obtained. This sounds complicated but it works well for me.

• An alternative way to be told about updates is available at Versions! This is a commercial service to help people keep up-to-date on software upgrades via e-mail notification. Users establish an account at Versions!, identify the software they want to track, and rely upon the system to let them know about upgrades. Over 60,000 products and all major operating systems are covered by Versions! Users can search the web site by developer, OS or application category, and sign-up via an online form to receive e-mail notification of new developments.
