implementing sendmail

Hi,
I have an application which sends emails directly to the smtp
server, since the application is not intelligent enough to acknowledge the
receipt of the message by the mail server, it has been proposed that the
application will send the mail to the local server where the application is
running. On the local server there would be a sendmail daemon running which
would periodically push these messages to the mail server, and in case if
the mail server is down the messages would be stored for an agreed number of
days and then get deleted.

My practical knowledge on sendmail is zero so i would request someone to
suggest me as to how to go about this or direct me to a link which can help
me.

Thank You very Much
