Jan,

If your server hasn't got a service key, when you boot your server up and
you have either a asici or graphical screen attached you should see after
about 6 minutes or when you LCD display show "E1F1" on the screen the
following symbols

Keyboard Memory Screen

If using a asici screen after the first bleep and before it reaches the
speaker symbol and the 2nd bleep press "F1" which is Service Mode or SMS as
it is called, then the server should throw you to a menu, thats the service
menu.

If using a graphical screen after the first bleep and before it reaches the
speaker symbol and the 2nd bleep press "1" which is Service Mode or SMS as
it is called, then the server should throw you to a menu, thats the service
menu.

I hope this helps

Thanks
Terry

Subject: A (very) basic question, sorry

Hi,

I must admit, I feel rather stupid for asking this, but....

I have two RS/6000s in my keeping and I am writing some simple howtos
about our systems. For all the other UNIXes I have found docs that
describe how to boot up in single user mode, and I understand that this
is called 'service mode' in AIX. But all my docs say 'turn the key to
*Service*' - which doesn't help a lot since my machines don't have a key
(that I can see, at least). The HW is 'IBM eServer pSeries 610 Model
6C1' - it even looks like the drawing in one of the manuals.

So, how do I do this? I know I can boot from the installation CD, but I
would like to keep it locked away - and also, I can't imagine that it
isn't possible, even simple, to do it without.

/jan
