Nope, you need a minimum of 3 disks to make a RAID-5 array. That's a function of how RAID-5 works. But you can use them as mirrored (RAID-1) and use the result as a single disk, or go with 2 non-RAIDed disks.

Would I (can I?) create a second array with these two disks? The existing disks (36 GB drives) and these 2 (73 GB drives) are all in the same 2104 unit. I see the option for creating another array, but I don't want to screw up the existing array. Thanks again for your input.

If you're just looking for the additional space in a couple of vg's, you should be able to make the disks pdisks and add them to the volume groups. But that would mean you would have your existing RAID 5 array, and a non-redundant disk in the vg. Gets you the space, but not the redundancy.
My experiences with IBM array controllers is primarily with SSA, so I welcome any responces to this thread that point out errors in my understanding.
And yes, that's a good thing to be scared of!

I sure HOPE you are wrong, but I am having trouble. I can add the disks as hot spares, change them to spares, but I don't seem to be able to add them to the array. All I want to do is add one disk each to 2 existing volume groups. I'm not really supposed to be even supporting this box, and I certainly don't feel like blowing the array away and recreating it. Kind of scares the hell out of me...

I could be wrong (it happens a lot!) but I do not think you are going to do what it sounds like you want to do. I've never been able to add disks to an existing array. I can create spare drives, or create an additional array (if the particular array controller supports multiple arrays) or use the drives as non-array drives, but not add to an existing array.
It seems logical you should be able to add the drives to expand an array, but the only docs I found said to backup to tape, destroy the array, rebuild with new drives included, restore data. Wish I had a better way.
If I am wrong, I'd be happy to be enlightened.

Here's what I get following your hint...It looks like that's the trick, because it does see them. I suppose I will CAUTIOUSLY add them to the existing array. They then show up in the ADD HOT SPARE option. I am assuming once I do that I can assign them to volume groups, etc. in the usual way?

I have this same hardware setup - try looking in smitty devices -> Disk Array -> IBM PCI SCSI Disk Array -> PCI SCSI Disk Array Manager, you might find some useful stuff in there.
Once you plug in the drives I *think* the green light should light up on them (may not till you configure them), and with the Disk Array menus you should be able to add them to your current array (or create a new one, though I'm not sure if that adapter will support more than one array...). I remember scratching my head over this till I found those menus...

Can you hear the drives spinning up or do you see a green LED on these drives?
You may have to provide AIX with additional drivers. Doing a cfgmgr -v may show you AIX is looking for drivers or some other clue.

Yes they are scsi. They are mounted in a 2104-DU3 expandable storage unit. (I'm just reading the specs here, I'm never dealt with this unit before)

I have never dealt with this machine before, (only worked with F50's), but these go into a 2104 drive module. They don't show up at all. There were 8 disks in it already, and these are the 9th and 10th.

You don't say whether they were hotpluggable disks or not, so we'll assume they were. after you inserted the drives, did you get power back to the drive slots? You might check and see if they show up, but as defined, not available.

Hello list. I just received two 73gb drives for a 7026-B80. I put them in place yesterday, and thought they would become available by running cfgmgr, but they do not appear. So, I scheduled a reboot last night hoping that would take care of it, but still no luck. In looking at the Installation instructions it appears that it might need a power off/ power on. Is there any way around that?
