Check block size for each tape drive device with:

lsattr -El rmtX (where X is the number of your DDS tape drive)

If block size are diferent, change the target tape drive with. SMIT
devices or chdev -d rmtX -a block_size=YYY, where X is the tape drive
device number and YYY the block size of source tape drive.

Best Regards,

Alexandre Sato.

        Subject: Reading tapes between servers

Our J40 and G30 (both AIX 4.3.2) have what I thought
were identical 4mm DDS2 tape drives, but they cannot
read tar files created by one another. lscfg shows
the two drives to have the same machine type and model
numbers and the same part numbers, but different FRU
numbers and EC levels. I don't know if they ever
could read each other's tapes. I was troubleshooting
tape drive failures when I tried it for the first
time. I've been told that differences in firmware or
adapters could account for this.

Is it possible for these drives to be working properly
and still be unable to read each other's tar files?
If so, what must I do to get them to be able to read
each other's tapes? TIA.

-Tim
