I just went through this, the batteries are rated for like 20000 hours IIRC, someone had posted earlier on here that once you see the first message you typically have about 1000 hours left.

To check the amount of time on the battery, as root run 'ssa_fw_status -a ssaX', where X is the number of your adapter (IE ssa0, 1, 2, etc).
This should give you the "expected battery life" and how many hours the current battery has ticked off.

After you install the new battery, don't forget to run 'ssa_format -l ssaX -b' to reset the hour counter...

I got the batteries from IBM for about $50 a pop, they're pretty cheap.
