There´s a white paper, available @ IBM, which I copied here. This should
answer your question.

64-bit Kernel Q&A
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Which AIX release has a 64-bit kernel? Where can I find out more
information?
The 64-bit kernel is supported in AIX V5. The AIX 5L 64-bit Kernel
Planning Guide provides detailed information.

- How do you enable the 64-bit Kernel?
If you do not select it during the AIX 5 installation, then you need to
install the bos.mp64 fileset. Once done, as root, enter following
commands, substituting 64 for 64-bit kernel or mp for 32-bit
multiprocessor kernel for ??.

ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_?? /unix
ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_?? /usr/lib/boot/unix
bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice
shutdown -r

- I have enabled the /etc/method/cfg64 in the inittab file. Does that mean
that I am runing 64-bit kernel? The machine is a H70.
No.

- I have done a bootinfo -K on a H70. I see a "32" and the OS is 4.3.3
with cfg64 loaded. Am I running 64-bit kernel?
Run bootinfo -y. If this returns 32, then even on AIX 5 you could not run
the 64-bit kernel on this hardware. AIX 4.3.3 does support 64-bit
user-space applications but only on 64-bit hardware.

- How do you apply the 64-bit extension to a 32-bit kernel?
install the bos.64bit fileset and use smit load64bit.

How do I tell whether an AIX 5.2 machine is running a 32 bit or 64 bit
kernel?

John
