Are you maybe using a really old Atape driver? The latest is Atape 8.2.8.
(lslpp -l | grep Atape).
The setup parameters you have there all look like defaults... which are
pretty good. I use them for all of my LTO1 drives.
Maybe old drive firmware. IBM has as 3512 driver avaibale now. (lscfg -vl
rmt#)

We have LTO and DLT 7000 both on the same RS/6000 (AIX 4.3.3). The LTO
is IBM 3580 LTO drive. Normally LTO backup speed should around 10MB/sec
or higher. We have been test both DLT and LTO use "backvg", "mksysb" and
"storix". The DLT speed out perform than LTO. I need your suggestion why
