Perhaps the on-site folks can check for a loose plug/cable/terminator ?
There probably is no S/W way to check this.

It's the ONLY device on that particular adapter. However, note one of my
final comments: "(Please note: I'm in England and the server's in
Switzerland.)"
Is there any way of checking this remotely?
