Re: IBM extends support for AIX 5.1.

I don't totally agree (not with you, but rather your customers
concerns)...From the RS/6000 handbook:

3.1.1 43P Model 140

The 7043 family was launched on November 8, 1996 with the availability of
the Model 140. The Model 140, a uniprocessor system, is an ideal workgroup
server for running small business and departmental applications. It is also
an
excellent solution for demanding 2D, but is suitable for midrange 3D
graphics
applications. The Model 140 will be withdrawn from marketing December 29,
2000.

That is almost 3 years ago this was announced.

Chapter 3. Workstations and Workgroup Servers
3.1.7 Upgrade Paths

The following Workstations and Workgroup Server upgrade paths are currently
available:
? 7025-F40 -> 7025-F50
? 7043-260 -> 7043-270
No upgrade paths are currently available for the 7043-140, 7043-150, and
7044-170 models. Depending on your current configuration, you may be able
to upgrade your processor on a 43P Model 140 up to a clockrate of 233 MHz
or 332 MHz or add a second processor to a 43P Model 260. Similarly, you can
increase the processor speed of the 44P Model 170 from 332 MHz to 400
MHz and the 44P Model 270 from the default 1-way to a 3-way or from a
2-way to a 3-way or 4-way.

Again - they should have seen the issue here.

Don't get me wrong - I do have issues with the AIX 5 timelines (for example
- why was 5.1 only marketed 4 months beyond the 4.3.3 EOS date?)

I hope you see that I am not picking an argument with you. It is just that
from my perspective, IBM got the word out long ago about their direction on
the AIX OS and hardware platforms.

I *do* concede however, that this is *my* perspective. Other's may be
different.

Bill,

I agree with you, but as an example I have a customer who is just going to
5.1 now on a 7012-E30. The machine is used for a stand alone application,
is doing everything that they require. The only reason that he is going to
5.1 is because they are withdrawing support of 4.3.3. He doesn't have the
budget to go to newer hardware. I have been at a few business partner
meetings lately and this seems to be a very common complaint. Keep in mind
that there are some fairly recent machines that will not run 5.2. IBM sold
a lot of 7043-140's and 240's not all that long ago, and 5.2 is not
supported on those machines.

But the 5.2 announcement was made over a year ago. There should not be a
backlash. People knew about this.

Bill,

That is probably correct. I see the extended support as a way of dealing
with the backlash that they are getting due to 5.2 not being compatible
with many older machines, where as 5.1 will run on all RS/6000 machines.
5.2 would force a lot of people to make new hardware decsions before they
are ready to.

I saw that this morning, but according to the IBM lifecycle web page, the
April 30 date is still withdrawal from marketing.
