Uncertainty.

I could be certain that a re-install would work. I've never come across
this situation before so couldn't be so sure that simply restoring the files
would work. What if I missed something? What if there was data in another
filesystem which would now be out of step?

The backed-up files would be out-of-date anyway, and picking out a hundred
or so files to restore would probably take nearly as long as just
re-installing, although it would have been better not to have to mess with
the rest of rootvg.
