If the 1.2TB drive is not physically present, there is no way for AIX to
know it's 1.2TB disk when you run "lsattr -El hdisk5".

ah, just because an lsdev sees it, doesn't mean it's physically got there
yet, does it? doesn't the lsdev just reference the odm? the drive doesn't
actually have to be physically present to see the odm settings for it, does
it?

that's a typo, the output come from "lspv -l hdisk5"

hdisk5 shouldn't be an lv....should be a pv. do an lsPV -l hdisk5.

#lslv -l hdisk5
0516-304 : Unable to find device id 00000000000000000000000000000000 in the
Device
        Configuration Database.

#lsdev -Cl hdisk5
hdisk5 Available 11-08-01 3542 Disk Array Device

And there is no doubt this disk could be accessed by OS, because I could see
the correct size while running "lsattr -El hdisk5"

Subject: Can't create volume group with 1.2TB disk

Hi, All,

We have a problem to define a VG with one 1.2TB hdisk which was built by
hardware RAID5 with 9 disks (shown as hdisk5 in AIX). I used command "mkvg
-s 1024 -t 2 -y testvg hdisk5" to create the testvg, so it should be
possible to define a Physical Volume with 1024*2*1016MB = 2.xTB.

But we get the following error message:

0516-024 mkvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run
        diagnostics.
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
0516-1254 mkvg: Changing the PVID in the ODM.
Method error (/etc/methods/chgdisk):
        0514-047 Cannot access a device.

0516-024 mkvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run
        diagnostics.
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
0516-304 mkvg: Unable to find device id in the Device
        Configuration Database.
0516-324 mkvg: Unable to find PV identifier for physical volume.
The Device Configuration Database is inconsistent for physical
        volumes.

Any idea why this happens? We are using AIX5.1 .
