Actually, with GNU tar, I think you can do a "tar -cvML <filesize> -f
<filename>, and it will prompt you when it reaches the indicated capacity.
 You can then move the file to a new name, hit return, and it will make
another file of the same name, and so on.

Tedious, but if it has to be tar, that should work.
