Re: Differential backups....

Without looking at the scripts (no time, today), I can say that in the past,
using the 'official' IBM programs to perform backups (mksysb, etc.) resulted
in the tape drive rewinding the tape, no matter whether the x.1 was
specified or not. We had the same requirement, and we ended up writing our
own scripts to perform the operations so that we could save money on tapes.
I didn't agree with the solution, but I had fun coding the programs. I also
wasn't the one tasked with performing restorations.

But if the company is in good enough financial shape, the safety provided by
one tape crapping out _only_ one (instead of five or more) backup sets is
really worth it. The money you save by using fewer tapes just puts more of
those dang eggs in one dangerous little basket. I wouldn't want to be the
one recovering the system when the tape couldn't be read and you have to
explain why you're restoring to last MONTH instead of YESTERDAY.

But I'll code it! ;-)

I believe you can specify /dev/rmt0.1 as the device to write your data to
(assuming /dev/rmt0 is the tape drive you're using). My understanding is
rmt0.1 is a non-rewinding alias for the tape drive.

Subject: Differential backups....

I am trying to implement a differential backup of my drives using one tape
per week to house the differentials. I want them stored back-to-back on the
tape but I don't see any way to tell the backup command to do this. I have
looked at the backup level which will do the differential part, but how do I
keep the tape from rewinding each time?
