It all depends on what your management considers important. Cost of
hardware, Application support or Administration ease.

Having managed Solaris 8, AIX 4.3 , HP-UX 10.20 , TRU64 4.x and IRIX 6.4, I
would say that AIX and HP-UX is the easiest. Smitty and SAM pretty much
allow you to do 95% of what you need in a daily basis. I have not looked at
SUN's SMC (Sun Management Console) lately but I believe it is suppose to
address the ease of management issue. With products like Veritas Volume
Management under HP-UX or Solaris, you get pretty much everything that AIX
LVM has and some (at a price). Solaris has had JFS code for 10+ years but
has only made it a no charge item since Solaris 7 or 8. Veritas is
preferred by most large shops due to the advanced GUI interface and other
bells and whistles that large companies need/want. I believe Solaris 9 goes
one step further in making Veritas unnecessary with a filesystem called QFS
but I have no experience with it. With HP-UX you have the option of HP-UX
LVM or Veritas. Functionality like O/S disk mirroring must be purchased
separately with HP-UX. With HP-UX 10.20, you had to unmount the filesystem
to expand but I heard this is not necessary with HP-UX 11.0. Veritas VM
allows you to shrink the filesystem.

As far a reliability, HP, IBM and SUN are fine when you purchase the OEM
service contracts. Linux, in my mind, is higher risk due to many unknown
variables. I suppose you could purchase Linux solution from IBM and have
IBM as you hardware/software support group.

Subject: AIX vs SUN - HP - Linux

Hi all;

Current Environment:
SP 9076 - 1 Frame, 7 Nodes
AIX 433 ML10
PSSP 32
IBM 3494 (w/ 2 3590 drives)
TSM 415 (soon to be 5x)
TDP/Oracle and RMAN
Oracle 816, 817, 9i
Apache ??
Netscape ??
And a whole slew of homemade Apps made in whatever product happened to be
hot that particular month.

I just received word this morning that management is now considering moving
OFF of AIX and onto either HP, SUN, or LINUX...and basically I need to study
the pro's/con's of each vendor for a meeting later this week. So if anyone
has any websites or personal experiences with any of these other OS's I'd
really appreciate any feedback.

For example how would you rate each vendor's ease of administration for the
oprating system and hardware, overall support, performance and reliability,
or anything else you could think of.

As for what is driving the "potential change", I guess the DBA's/Developers
are frusterated that AIX is considered a 5th tier platform by Oracle (Sun
being #1) and as they have so much invested in Oracle...we need to evaluate
other hardware. ;)

God I love this job!

Thanks for the feedback;
Theresa
