Subject: System Files filling up

Hello,
I am running AIX 4.3.3 ML 08 on a RS 6000 7025 F40

My / system is filling up and I wanted to know what these type of files
are.

core.nnnnnnnn Where n is 8 digits
protrace.nnnnn Where n is 5 digits

Can I remove any of them?? Do they server a function?
The core.nnnnnnnn goes back to July 2, 1999
The protrace.nnnnn goes back to July 23 1999

Thanks in advance.
