is this a development box? I'd think memory is cheap compared to developer
downtime and nonproductivity. but then, i'm not a manager :)

It depends on your environment. Our DBA/Developer's do A LOT with Express,
and 9i's OLAP feature on this node - thus even with a 3:1 paging/RAM ratio
it still seizes the box when anyone does much of anything with these
products. Express is a HUGE memory hog and the only thing we can do is to
add more physical RAM, something that isn't going to happen - so they live
with the weekly reboots.

I would assume that adding more paging to your environment should fix the
problem...that's a good place to start anyway.

Thanks;
Theresa

Oracle 9i is running on this node . Do I need to power recycle this box
every week ?Isn't there any other solution other than reboot to fix this
problem?
This means to me - I have to submit every week change control form .

>>I assume a reboot fixed your node's login problem?
Waiting for change control boards approval to IPL this node .

Thank You

Hi;

We have this happen quite a bit on one of our test nodes running just
about every Oracle product under the sun - with 1GB of physical RAM. ;)
If this node isn't rebooted weekly (or if someone kicks off a massive
Oracle Express job) paging will hit 100% and anyone trying to log in will
get the exact error you're seeing "Fork Function Failed...blah, blah,
blah." The only fix is to reboot the node (for us anyway) with an 'spmon
-d off[on] n7' from the cwsin.

I assume a reboot fixed your node's login problem?

Have a Happy New Year!
Theresa

This is RS/6000 SP system , No console,no keyboard on the node .

I am trying spcws01@/>s1term -w 5 3 , but no luck ..I think should
reboot this node using cshutdown /
perspewctives/spmon
before doing that any other pointers from SP gurus ?

However I found one login session active on controlworkstation opened by
co-worker in last week :

OLD:f5n67 /tsg/tsm>ls
ksh: 0403-031 The fork function failed. There is not enough memory
available.

Log in from the console. No network jobs required to log into the console.

With a keyboard or serial cable.
