what, exactly are you trying to do? you could do a shutdown -m if you just
need to get single-user control....or put the install cd in and boot to it
if you need to install a new version....

depends on the model. on older ones, there's a service key that you put
into service mode before the boot. on newer, pci-based machines, you either
hit f5, or 5 just before it opens the boot device.
