 ... as opposed to ... what? foreground attached to a terminal? background
attached to a terminal? background detached from a terminal (e.g., a system
startup process)? What is the difference you're looking for? Environment?
Terminal?

Performing a `ps` (no options) and seeing if 'cron' is there might be one
way ... but why? Both curiosity and gettin' the right answer.
