i'm using nagios (formerly netsaint). One of the questions I had, was won't
the normal os error and diag processes send snmp traps for that sort of
thing? i'm pretty sure the ibm mibs have values for fan speed, etc.

Patrol monitors the error log for that sort of thing, as most products
would. So anything that writes to that can be monitored, which would
include all of those failures. Of course, no product is going to be all
that good if you get a total, catastrophic failure; all it can do is tell
you that the system is down and perhaps report the front panel LED codes.

PSSP Event Management can do the same sort of thing. For the SP, it'll also
access the supervisors, so you can see the various conditions they monitor,
like temperature and power supplies. A quick look in Perspectives will show
you some of the things it can monitor. There's a Redbook on the subject.
(Can't remember what it's called, but it's mentioned in the PSSP Admin Guide
if you have trouble finding it.) One of the standard PSSP courses deals
with it as well.

All of them can be customized to monitor anything you like.

>From the course, and reading a little about it, I was quite impressed with
what the standard PSSP tools are capable of. However, they need a lot of
customisation. For most companies it would be cheaper to buy in a product
that required less work.

I believe that there are a couple of free software tools to do this sort of
monitoring; I'm sure someone's mentioned one on here.
