i use watch to watch the differences between the 2 instances

where it works i see

FILE_Open tgdspur1 FAIL Sat Nov 16 16:00:52 2002 oracle
        flags: 67110146 mode: 660 fd: 11 filename
/prod/oracle/ora817/dbs/lkPFMSO

        flags: 67108866 mode: 0 fd: 11 filename
/prod/oracle/ora817/dbs/lkPFMSO

where it does not work I see
FILE_Open tgdspur1 FAIL Sat Nov 16 15:55:40 2002 oracle
        flags: 67110146 mode: 660 fd: 11 filename
/prod/oracle/ora817/dbs/lkPFMSR

ok, after all its the same... the file gets openen with mode 0. just
wondering why it needs 3 where it does work (PFMSO) and 2 where it
doesnt (PFMSR)
