destroy all data on SSA RAID disks

Folks,

Another format question...

We have another RS6000 connected to an SSA RAID Array

I have deleted the volume group that was "on top" of the array

The SSA disks and array have been allocated to another server

The hardware guy has asked that I don't format the drives but do
something like a "newfs" in Solaris

Can this be done or will format destroy the RAID configuration?
