Thanks everyone for the assist. Turns out it was a problem with my NIS
setup, or at least the
way this particular system was binding to my domain. I removed all the
client settings for NIS
and tried. root could then log in fine. Of course, regular users couldn't
because the user names
and passwords were supplied by NIS. I reconfigered as an NIS client and all
seems to have
begun working again....

Thanks,

I've had this problem before on HP-UX. It ended up being a conflict in the
DNS resolv.conf file where the primary and secondary server were reversed.

Subject: CDE issues....

Hi List,

I've run into a very interesting problem with one of my AIX 4.2 systems....

When I log in as root, I get an error message stating that the DT messaging
service could not start and that
I should check /etc/hosts to make sure my hostame and IP are correct (they
are)....

As a regular user, I can log in without that error message, but when I try
to exit, I get a message stating that
"A ToolTalk connection could not be established"..... I've seen this before
and freeing up disk space has corrected
it, but that is not an issue right now.

Has anyone ever experianced these problems together (or separately) that
may be able to shed some light on them???

All assistance is, as always, greatly appreciated.
