This has taken a long time, but it's finally been resolved. It was helped a
little by a microcode update: it didn't make it work but it produced some
different LED codes.
The problem was eventually tracked down to NFS exports; in particular of
/spdata/sys1/install/aix433/spot/spot_aix433/usr and
/export/nim/scripts/<hostname>.script
Entries for both of these were removed, then setup_server run again. The
next
install worked OK.
I had looked at NFS exports previously, at Holger's suggestion, but
obviously
didn't manage to hit quite the right combination. For future reference, it
would be simplest to clear all exports and just let setup_server add them
back.
