If you are going from root to another user (say in a cron job), then yes,
you can. Going the other way, no.

I've seen this question before but I do not remember where or the answer.
I did check the archives but found nothing.
I would like to use the su command within a script, can the script supply
the password?.
I'm try to avoid installing sudo if possible.
