Re: Veritas Foundation Suite on AIX. why?

I have to chime in here...i've just been handed a mandate that all our new
systems will be solaris (new managers (sigh)). And there is a (unsupported)
procedure to allow you to have an unencapsulated, but mirrored root volume.
It's NOT a pretty procedure, believe me, and there are at least 3 spots
where a mistype will render your system unbootable. I'm fairly impressed
with the product as such, but compared to the integration of the lvm, it's
worthless. I've heard rumors for years that ibm was going to scrap the lvm
in favor of this nonsense and i've shuddered each time. Solaris 9 is
supposed to have such features built in, so even SOLARIS admins won't be
using the veritas product as their only option any more. Why would ibm
start?

Pet Peeve time.

I've also used Veritas on Solaris and can tell you it's very BAD thing
compared to the LVM on either AIX or HP-UX. If Veritas on Solaris is
setting the standard, it's a very bad standard.

The LVM under Solaris is NOT built into the kernel - it's an add on piece
of software. If you want to upgrade Solaris, or Veritas (two different
steps) you first have to "unencapsulate" the root volume group - i.e.: You
no longer have any type of data protection while you are performing the
upgrade! Then you have to "re-encapsulate" the root volume group when you
are done. And God help you if something happens to your license key. Reboot
and you no longer have access to any of your logical volumes!

Most AIX'ers don't even give the LVM a second thought because it's such a
basic part of the OS. Not so on Solaris.

Do you want a third part product controlling such a basic part of your
system? Not me.
