John,
Linux can be installed on the IBM RISC/6000 workstations. I have had luck with Red Hat ES 3. As well as Mandrake 9.1 for PPC. The only problem I have seen with Linux on RISC/6000's is the video card. I believe the only supported video card was a gxt 150 or somewhere around there. As a workaround, we ended up installing standard PCI video. A good site that list different flavor's of Linux by hardware is: http://www.linuxiso.org.
NOTE: By far Mandrake was the easiest install, on older generation RISC/6000 workstations even going as far back as 7043-150.
Thank you, and have a great day.
