Please forgive the basic question, but have you confirmed that the drive can
read its own tapes? Just a possibility, slim, to be eliminated.

After that, have you tried 'tcopy /dev/rmtx' to see if the system can read
the tape at all? First turn off compression on the source system. Then, I'd
create a test tape on the source system with three or four different
archives on it (use rmtx.1). On the new system see if tcopy can get at it.
If not, change block size to zero and try again.

Try using 'cpio' and 'dd' in addition to 'tar.' It's possible you're
running into something else causing a problem. Also try 'backup' and
'restore.'

It's quite possible that the heads are not lined up and it can't find its
way to the 'beginning.' We've run into this here. It'll be worth a call to
service after that, saying that one or the other needs reallignment. They
may or may not come out ... that's what we've run into here.

Subject: [aix-l] EMERGENCY: DDS-3 tape can NOT read on DDS-4 driver !!!

we just purchase a IBM Pseries computer. This new computer has AIX 4.3.3
and DDS-4 tape driver installed. I am doing the migration work from old
server to Pseries. The old server has AIX 4.3.3 and DDS-3 tape driver
installed. I "tar file" used DDS-3 cartridge (125) and bring this tape
cartridge to DDS-4 tape driver. when I type "tar tvf /dev/rmt0" following
message come out:

tar: 0511-193 an error occurred while read from the media
    the media surface is damaged

The DDS-4 flash light will be ON and "errpt -a" show "tape dirty head". I
have been replace several tape cartridges (brand new) and still the
same. the tape setup parameter are:

                   DDS-3 DDS-4
                 -------------- -----------
Block size 1024 1024
density #1 37 38
density #2 36 37
data compression yes yes

I have been tried following setup still make NO difference:

1. change DDS-4 "density #1" to 37 and "density #2" to 36.

2. set "block size " to 0 on both DDS tape. In this case NO message come
out and you can see DDS-4 tape driver continue read tape cartridge, but
nothing show up.

Can anyone help me on this?

Thanks.
