when we just bought a new server, I found that the ultrium drive was cheaper
than the 8mm from ibm....and it holds 200gig compressed and is way fast.
And the media for the 8mm is $50/tape for 20gig, while the ultrium is about
$100/tape, but holds 5 times more. Go with the ultrium.

Subject: P620 memory/tape drive configuration

Hello list folks,

I am evaluating hardware configurations for a P620 6F1. I have two
questions about what I have seen proposed by our vendors.

1. I want 4 GIG of memory in the 620. Two vendors propose IBM part number
4137 (2X2048) which I think is really 4 1024MB DIMMS. Two other vendors
are proposing going with 8 512MB SDRAM DIMMS to get to 4 GIG of
memory. The cost appears to be significantly less for the 8 512MB
configuration. Any opinions on which would really be best to go with?

2. Different vendors are proposing different TAPE DRIVE options. It looks
like there is 4MM and 8MM options. It looks like the 4MM can hold at
double density 40GIG, while the 8MM can only hold 20GIG. We could use the
40GIG capacity. And it looks like the 40GIG tape drive is cheaper. So I
wonder if it is slower, more prone to problems, etc. Any thoughts or
experience on which you would go with?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kriss
